At the bottom of the Estate, on the banks of the lake, stand the cottages of the Queen’s Hamlet built by Richard Mique for Marie-Antoinette. Survivors of a dazzling, lively era, they illustrate the Queen’s taste for the charms of country life. Certain houses were dedicated to agricultural pursuits, others to the pleasures of taking walks and hosting guests. Their interior reveals a refined decor in contrast with their rustic look.
